the women's treatment center

What we do:

The Women's Treatment Center (TWTC) provides women with a continuum of care, recovery tools and parenting skills to maintain a sober lifestyle as they rebuild their lives and futures and mend the bonds with their families.

TWTC's continuum of care includes:
  • Residential, family-based treatment and services for up to two years
  • Beginning with 24-hour medically-monitored detoxification
  • Continuing through residential treatment (up to 120 days, for women with and without children)
  • Continuing with outpatient treatment
  • Ending in a transitional Recovery Home where education, job training and work are priority.

Who we serve:

Most of the women TWTC serve struggle not only with substance abuse but also with poverty, homelessness, trauma, and, often, a concurrent mental disorder. Without intervention, their children - many born exposed to drugs - are almost certain to follow in their footsteps.

Each year we serve more than 1200 women and close to 400 children; most are from Chicago, although we serve clients from throughout Illinois.

Who does TWTC serve? Do you treat pregnant women?

TWTC serves women ages 18 and older. Priority admission is given to pregnant and postpartum women, women with HIV/AIDS, and femaile IV drug users. Pregnant women are welcome at all levels of care, including in TWTC's medically-monitored Detox unit

What makes us unique?

TWTC's focus is on women and their unique needs. We focus on their needs by providing programs that support their recovery, including:

  • A fully-licensed therapeutic Infant-Toddler Daycare
  • A Pre-Kindergarten Program (collaboration with the Chicago Board of Education)
  • A 24-hour Crisis Nursery
  • Early Childhood Mental Health Services
  • A substantive Parenting Program
Among our specialized programs are:
  • Project Futures: A 6-month Outpatient treatment program in cooperation with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) for women in danger of losing custody of their children because of drug abuse.
  • Alternative Sentencing Program: A residential program allowing mothers with two years or less remaining on a non-violent drug-related prison sentence to complete their sentence in TWTC's Recovery Home with their young children.
  • Parents and Children Together (PACT): A video teleconference program and support groups at TWTC for children whose mothers are incarcerated in the Decatur Correctional Center.
  • Offender Reentry Program: A full-continuum of substance abuse treatment and recovery support services for women returning to Chicago from two state prisons.

What we bring to the people of Illinois:

TWTC offers the people of Illinois the best hope for breaking the intergenerational cycle of drug addiction and mending the bonds of families. TWTC is a 501(c)(3) agency offering services without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation or ability to pay. All of our programs and facilities are accessible to persons with physical disabilities. Programs are funded through government contracts and grants, foundation and corporate grants, and the generous contributions of individuals, social and religious organizations, and local businesses.
